Course record catapults Munro into the lead

20th Apr 10 at 06:59pm

All it took was an 8-under par 63 for PGA Professional and Jumeirah Golf Estate's, Steven Munro to win Monday's Al Ain PGA Open. Munro's outstanding round also secured him the Palm Resort Golf Club's course record.

With a total of 7 birdies and an eagle on the third, Munro clearly had a strong advantage from the tee which saw the course succumb to his magnificent performance. Munro carded a 32 on the outward 9 and came home strong with an impressive 31 on the inward 9, finishing his round with one of his birdies on the 18th.

Emirates Golf Club's Andrew Matthews shot a strong 2-under 69, with birdies on 5, 8, 9 and 12, but unfortunately holes 15 and 16 proved a challenge resulting in consecutive bogies. A final birdie on the 18th saw Matthews grasp 2nd place over Tower Links' Simon Payne who finished the day on a 1-under 70.

Munro's win moves him up two places on the Order of Merit ladder, from 5th to 3rd. However overall leader, Simon Payne, sits on a firm 653 point lead over 2nd place, and from his current vantage point looks assured to walk away with the Order of Merit title.
