Newcomer Nicoll tames the Fire at the Dubai PGA Open
8th Feb 10 at 08:13pm
There’s a new face in the UAE PGA ranks and there’s no doubt he’s intent on writing his name on the UAE PGA’s 2009/2010 tournament honour board.
After finishing runner-up in the past 2 consecutive tournaments, Callum Nicoll, The Els Club’s Retail Manager and PGA Professional made his plans apparent on Tuesday February 8th by taking the title in the Dubai PGA Open, held at Jumeirah Golf Estate’s Fire course, carding a 1-under par 71.
Finishing 2 strokes behind Nicoll, and tying for 2nd place, were Malcolm Young of Arabian Ranches Golf Club and Al Naboodah’s James Bowring, both with a 1-over par 73.
Before walking away with his first trophy in a UAE PGA tournament, Nicoll commented that ‘the Fire course was set up very well and was in fantastic condition today, especially the greens. After a bogey at the 2nd and a birdie at the 3rd, I had two good shots into the 7th to set up an eagle”. The 10th hole, however, proved a challenge for Nicoll where he shot a 3-over par 7, “I played well from then on with birdies at the 12th and 18th”. “Thank you to everyone at Jumeirah Golf Estates, and to the UAE PGA Tournament Committee Malcolm Young and Steven Hubner for organising today’s tournament” he added.
The leader of this season’s Order of Merit Simon Payne of Tower Links Golf Club, finished the day in 6th place, and whose 76 was enough to continue his reign.
