Payne's performance pays dividends in Auriga Masters

13th Jan 10 at 08:21pm

Tower Links' Simon Payne increased his lead in the UAE PGA's Order of Merit standings by securing victory at the Els course in Wednesday's 3rd event in the UAE PGA's Patron's Cup series, the Auriga Masters.

Payne finished his round with an even-par 72, claiming the claret-jug inspired winner's trophy over Els Club's new arrival Callum Nicol who, in his first UAE PGA appearance carded a 2-over par 74 on his home course.  Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club's Stephen Hubner settled into 3rd place with a sound 3 over-par 75.

"The course was set-up for scoring today, but the greens were quick which made it difficult to convert birdie opportunities" said Payne.

In the Amateurs division, favourite golfing son Khaled Yousuf carded a gross 75 to claim victory, after a countback, over Miki Mirza. Paul King continued his podium finish run by closing play with a respectable 76.

"Director of Golf, Chris Brown and his team at the Els Club provided us with an enjoyable day's play" said Auriga's Managing Director Richard Flower, "We are very pleased our event is associated with such an outstanding course and facility and we look forward to working on future events with the PGA".

“We are delighted with the response and support of the Patron’s Cup series” added Chief Executive Julian Danby, “our commitment to raising the profile of our Patrons to and through our audience, is paramount in all our activities”.

The 4th and final event in the Patron’s Cup series, the Acuma Shield, will be held at The Address Montgomerie Dubai on March 3rd.
