Sheridan to tee off alongside International Professionals in 2010's Abu Dhabi Golf Championship
2nd Dec 09 at 12:18pm
Richard Sheridan led a strong field of UAE's Golf Professionals, who teed it up at Abu Dhabi Golf Club on Monday, to claim both the points and the title of the fifth tournament in the UAE PGA's Order of Merit series. The event was also the qualifier to see one UAE PGA member secure a highly sought after tee time in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, scheduled for play at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club in January of 2010.
Going into Monday's event Simon Payne, favourite son of Tower Links Golf Club, led the Order of Merit pack slightly ahead of last year's winner Richard Sheridan of Al Badia Golf Club. So from the start, this event was destined to provide an outstanding day of golf.
Payne and Sheridan both carded an even-72 so a play-off ensued, resulting in a near repeat of the recent Sharjah Shooting Club Men's Open where Payne beat Sheridan on the 2nd play-off hole, "so it was nice to get some revenge by making a birdie on the 2nd play-off hole at Abu Dhabi to win the 5th Order of Merit and secure my place in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship" quipped Sheridan.
"I feel very lucky indeed as I didn’t play well at all tee-to-green, however my putting was unbelievable, I had 25 putts in total which saved my day" said Sheridan, " I managed to play the last 3 holes, which is also the hardest stretch on the course, in 1 under, courtesy of a chip-in at the 17th. I am quite excited and at the same time very nervous about playing in my first European tour event" added Sheridan.
"I would like to thank the extended team of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championships for providing such a great initiative for one of our PGA members" said UAE PGA Tournament Director Stephen Hubner . "Special thanks to the Abu Dhabi Golf Club team for providing us with a course in outstanding condition to play, we are sincerely delighted to have such valuable partners in the UAE's Golf Clubs" he added.
