10th OOM Event at Tower Links GC, RAK
Tuesday March 4th 2008
Dubai Creek and Yacht Club’s David Gray launched an amazing back-nine comeback to birdie four of the last five holes and win the Fifth UAE Professional Golfers’ Association Order of Merit Event at Arabian Ranches. The UAE Professional circuit has become extremely competitive this season with a sharp increase in prize money thanks to the generous backing of patrons Al Naboodah, Rotana Hotels, IHP and SpenglerFox. And that competitiveness is shining through at every Order of Merit Event.
Tower Links, Ras Al Khaimah was the venue for the 10th UAE PGA Order of Merit event. Nineteen of the UAE’s PGA Professionals competed over the Par 72 course.
Stephen Hubner DCGYC, went out in 2 over par 38 leaving it all to do on the back nine, birdies on 11 and 16 helped Stephen to stay at 2 over after 17. Although not having a successful day with his putter, he then took advantage of the short par 5 18th by hitting a 6 iron from 200 yards to a mere 2 feet and tapped in for an Eagle 3 to post the clubhouse lead on level par 72.
Although starting with a bogey, David Gray DCGYC holed a number of crucial putts during his round to stay at just 1 over after 17.. Playing the last directly behind Stephen Hubner, David birdied the par 5 to force a play off.
Both players then ventured back out on to the 1st hole in a sudden death play off. Gray won the toss and tee off first, hitting his driver straight down the middle. Hubner leaked his drive to the right onto the sand and with a few trees to hit over he hit his second short of the bunkers before the green. Gray from 90 yards pitched to 6 feet for 2 putting the pressure firmly with Hubner who then bravely hit to 3 feet to almost confirm his par. Gray didn’t want to take the match any further and sunk his 6 foot putt for birdie and the victory.
